End of Year Battlegroup Update

2024 has been quite the year for Relic. It’s safe to say that becoming an independent studio came with challenges, lots of learning, and adjustment. That said, we are proud of the work we’ve been able to consistently deliver for Company of Heroes 3, and we’re extremely thankful for your continued support and passion.

Heavy Tank Battlegroups

What’s more, we are now in a much stronger spot for 2025 and are very excited for what’s to come. Our team is hard at work on the new Heavy Tank Battlegroups, which will arrive in late February 2025. We still have more to do before we’re ready to really show them off, but for now, check out this little teaser we whipped up to keep you guessing over the holidays!

Though we can’t say much more about the Battlegroups themselves, we do have some new info we can share today. First, we’re excited to announce that we have four shiny new Battlegroups rolling off the production line — one for each faction. We’ve put a ton of work into them, and we genuinely think these will be our most exciting post-launch Battlegroups to date. Everyone loves a good heavy tank but believe us when we say there’s a lot more to these Battlegroups than just some big chonky armor.

Getting down to brass tacks, we want to keep creating amazing content for Company of Heroes 3. So, to that end, these Battlegroups will be arriving as a DLC pack on Steam in late February of 2025. Regarding pricing, we haven’t finalized anything and hope to share more with you in the New Year.

Stealth & Stronghold

We’re also going to make changes to how we offer the Australian Defense (British Forces) and Battlefield Espionage (Deutsches Afrikakorps) Battlegroups, which are currently free in-game. When we first released these Battlegroups for Company of Heroes 3, we made them available to claim for free as a thank you for sticking with us as we improved the game post-launch. This content wasn’t cheap for us to make, but we felt it was the right thing to do for our players at the time.

We’re not charging for these just yet, so there’s no need to worry. We are planning a major anniversary update in February 2025 and we want to give returning players the chance to grab these Battlegroups and take advantage of this thank you deal.  We plan to remove the Australian Defense and Battlefield Espionage Battlegroups from the in-game store after the Anniversary update. We are targeting March 21st for this change. They will then be made available to purchase via the Stealth & Stronghold bundle for $13.99 USD on the Steam Store. This change will help us continue delivering new and exciting Battlegroups and additional free updates throughout 2025 and beyond. To claim them before we make this change, visit the in-game store in Company of Heroes 3 and navigate to the Battlegroups tab. So, “quit yer lollygagging" and don't miss out!

That’s all for us for 2024 folks. Happy Holidays and we’ll see you in the new year with more Company of Heroes action!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will the Stealth & Stronghold or new Heavy Tank Battlegroups ever be made available for Merit or War Bonds?

A: Our plan is to offer these and future Battlegroups through the Steam Store so that players have more robust support options with their purchases. Additionally, this change will allow us to continue delivering new and exciting content throughout 2025 and beyond.

Q: Will you have anything new for me to spend my Merit or War Bonds on in the future?

A: Yes! We are currently working on plans for additional items to be made available in the in-game store. We still need to finalize those plans before we’re ready to share more, but we hope to have more information for all of you in the coming months.

Q: When will the Stealth & Stronghold bundle be available in the Steam Store?
A: March 21st, 2025.

Q: How long do I have to claim the Australian Defense and Battlefield Espionage Battlegroups for free?
A: You can claim them for free via the in-game store until March 20th, 2025.

Q: If I already claimed the Australian Defense and Battlefield Espionage Battlegroups, will I lose access to them?
A: No! Once claimed these Battlegroups are tied to your account.

Q: Will this change affect the Advanced Infantry (US Forces) or Italian Coastal (Wehrmacht) Battlegroups?

A: No. The Advanced Infantry and Italian Coastal Battlegroups are available as part of the Hammer & Shield DLC pack available on the Steam Store.

Q: Once the Stealth & Stronghold bundle is released on March 21st, 2025, if I have a problem purchasing it on the Steam Store or want a refund, who should I contact?

A: You should reach out to Steam Support here.

Don't abandon the game Relic. Let 2025 be the year where you deliver loads of new content. I'll buy it all.

I hope the new battlegroups are balanced to the exisiting ones or the existing ones are brought up to their level. It is not fun when the new thing is just egregiously overpowered and Heavy Tanks have a history of being powerful in CoH.

And a HUGE yeepee!!! for this unexpected news!

I absolutely cannot wait for those (V1 rocket better slam hard and no flares!) and am eagerly hoping on some Singleplayer expansion down the line! Proper Opposing Front Expansion Relic! Launch the goods!

and how do you imagine that the guys should continue to create new content? It was intended as a thank you and was communicated from the beginning that the two battlegroups would only be free for a certain period of time

I don't mind a previously free Battlegroup no longer being free. In the perspective that it was a gesture of goodwill for people who dealt with the rough release, and now they're making it payed for people who are going to come later, sounds reasonable to me.

I'm even able to see the idea of making Battlegroups paid-only, but barely. Like, $3-$4 a group, buy as a pack for less kind-of-thing if it FORCED paid content... Not $14 for TWO groups that are ONLY available as a pack and ONLY available as paid content.

This is not going to go over well. I honestly don't know what the new execs and/or upper echelon Relic are thinking on this one. I'm a die-hard Relic fan (and yah, I absolutely loved DoW III and The Outfit).

You're doing it backwards, Relic! Cosmetics don't affect gameplay, make THEM paid-only if need-be (or certain ones in packs, like CoH 2) and make Battlegroups earnable via Merit or paid (and per individual, not as packs), and then have packs in the Steam Store at a discount versus getting them individually in the in-game store.

I get that Battlegroups are more difficult to make than Commanders. I get that your team has been cut. This is not the way to handle it, though. It will make the investors and Relic lose their audience and money.

Make an expansion, do the scenario-based stuff like in CoH 2, add mechanics in co-op missions (maybe make them free for PvP, kind of like ArmA), and justify a paywall via co-op expansion then.

I know that last bit is not too coherent, but tl;dr: Find ways of making actual expansions, sell skins, keep the Battlegroups in the in-game store and purchasable via Merit.

DO NOT paywall game-changing mechanics (like Battlegroups). ESPECIALLY since there has been a SEVERE lack of additional content in that form. We've been waiting for the easiest, juiciest way for Relic to add content and get money, and now that it is coming, they change the game up in such a way that it's a giant slap in the face, not only to us, but a slap to what Relic has been about since its inception.

Who said anything about removing free content? The 2 battlegroups where maid temporarily free to claim upon release. Its not being taken out of anyone's hands whos already claimed it. At least that's not what this news says. It could theoretically be what they mean. In which case, just because a product was made temporarily free doesn't make it greed to eventually finally price it. Especially when you where fully informed about the content being free temporarily as stated multiple times before and after those BG's came out on discord and this website.

Don't let the naysayers bring you down: A lot of us are adults with jobs, and we're more than willing to pay what we need to keep your families fed and our RTS games fantastic.

What an actually crazy and naive comment to spit out.

The two battlegroups in question were offered for free because Relic knew the game was launched in a rough state and it was made clear it was going to be free temporarily only.

That they kept them for free for what is going to be almost a full year, is yes actually crazy...but in a good way.

awesome job, cant wait and ready to pay to support you guys. Dont let the negative comments lower your morals. There is lot of us who enjoy your game and are ready to support it to keep expanding.

My wish as 4v4 only player, that maybe someday I will be able to play 5v5 automatch with old school no victory points but standard play until one team will destroy other team base

Dude. It's amazing it was free to ever begin with, let alone them going out of their way to let you know it's going away. Free DLC is basically unheard of. You know why we wouldn't get a COH4? If 3 doesn't make money... get your head out of your @$$

I hope you have designed the allied tanks as cool as the German tanks.   Because the allied tanks look like a plastic toy. The German tanks give the impression that they are made of metal. Also, the tanks should not pass through each other like transparent material. They must find their own path and back up when other vehicles pass, just like COH2. In fact, the game has many problems, but we have no other choice but you, so we tolerate you Relic. I hope you will not disappoint us and offer Battle Groups for sale at a reasonable price. Thank you for your efforts, Relic.
