Development Priorities - Checking In

Since the launch of Company of Heroes 3 in February, our team has received considerable player feedback, data, and information. Our principal focus has been on fixing urgent issues through hotfixes and supporting and improving your gameplay experience with larger updates.

With Operation Sapphire Jackal, we fixed over a thousand issues & bugs. In the same update, we also brought Challenges, Merit, and cosmetics to the game. These were not received as well as we hoped, notably due to a lack of transparent communication based on the feedback that you were giving us and our own team’s priorities.

So, we’ve reorganized, and we hope you will see improvements in our communication in the coming weeks as we are planning to give more insight into what happens behind the scenes during the live development of CoH3.

We’ve already begun this process with last week’s livestream where we offered insight into how our Design team approached the latest Balance Update. Additionally, we want to show you more of what is in the works at Relic for our next update. We saw quite a bit of feedback on our Development Priorities list, so we hope that this post today also provides insight into how we make decisions.

We are dedicated to supporting this game for years to come and our aim is to strengthen player trust with effective communication and action to back it up, as we continue to make CoH3 the best experience for all our players.

What is a Development priority list?

Our April Development Priorities

We wanted to provide more clarity on what “Development Priorities” means to our team, and what players can expect. What do the different columns mean? How are these items and features prioritized? Why are some items not listed here? Hopefully, we can answer some of those questions.

On Target

Last-minute technical problems notwithstanding, you should expect these items to be in the next one or two updates. That is the Soon™ list!

In Development

In the In Development phase, we are actively working on these items. However, they may not be slated for an upcoming release/update, or the timing of their delivery is still being nailed down. These items will be scheduled for a release as soon as they’re completed, or moved to On Target once we have a better idea of when we can deliver them.

Scouting

Items in the Scouting phase are in development but will need more time before you see them in game. We may be at the design phase, are still scoping it, or working on prototypes. Sometimes items in Scouting will be a larger undertaking for the team. For example, a new Expansion!

Subject to change

During development, unforeseen technical issues or new unplanned priorities might come up. This can impact any item on our Development Priorities list. These items might then be moved off of the list until they are closer to release.

What if the item I care about is not on the Development Priorities list?

This is meant to be a high-level list and is not representative of everything we are working on. With this list, we want to share the items that we know our team can deliver in a reasonable time and that players are interested in. Some larger features might take a while longer to show up on our Development Priorities, especially if they’re in very early stages, but they are likely still on our radar!

Our progress

Progress since the March Development Priorities list

Released in Operation Sapphire Jackal

  • The gameplay changes originally planned for that update were released earlier with the 1.0.5 balance hotfix, but our communications didn’t reflect it properly.

  • Hundreds of bugfixes and improvements

  • Challenges, Merit and Cosmetics

Released after Operation Sapphire Jackal

  • Hotfixes and stability patches

  • Balance update

Moved Items

  • Several items were moved up to On Target and In Development

On hold

  • Because we want to work on critical improvements to the game, we had to shift focus from some of the additional accessibility features we were working on. The work is just on hold for now until we are ready to get back to it and was removed from the list.

What is next?

The most recent Development Priorities list, as shown on last week's livestream

Balance Update

  • We released the Balance Update last week on April 20th

Next update

  • Remaining On Target items will be included in the next PC update.

As outlined in the above list, our focus right now is on improving the overall gameplay experience, rolling out fixes, adding additional quality-of-life features, and bringing new content to Company of Heroes 3. This means some requested items like Replays, Observer Mode or Ranked seasons aren’t on our short-term list for now. Those features are still important to us, but we feel that focusing first on improving the overall quality of the game will have a much larger impact on all our players' experience in CoH3.

Hopefully, this rundown of the Development Priorities list sheds some light on how our team prioritizes features, defines what those mean, explains how items make the list, and outlines when you can expect them to be delivered. Our team hopes to continue sharing more insights like this in the weeks and months ahead via blogs, developer livestreams, and more. Our next update to the Development Priorities list will come shortly after our next major update, Operation: CLASSIFIED, which is in the works. Stay tuned and we will have more information for you soon!

Much appreciated! One of the areas of improvement that could be achieved on the communication front would be also being more transparent about the feature requests that are not going to happen. Either in the threads that raise them or in the developer streams, currently its quite frustrating not knowing if features that have been requested are ever going to be implemented and hoping that they just 'show up' on these charts. Better to deflate expectations early or open up the discussion to feedback before its a fait accompli.

Seeing basic stuff on the scouting list like ranked display and a player profile, next to an expansion? Can you guys finish this game first before you start thinking about expansions?

I agree with M3ta, transparency also involves saying what for you should be retained and what not, being able to summarize your long-term vision on the game and not just on the month to come . The patches and improvements summarized for this month of April seem acceptable, however, in my opinion, before releasing the new extension, the game interface should be reviewed (overall)

I am not trying to sound negative or bad however all of these upcoming changes should have been part of release. COH2 had a terrible launch. Dawn of War 3 had a terrible launch. Age of Empires 4 had a terrible launch. This could have been your moment to shine and give players faith in Relic as a company but instead Relic chose to continue its trend of releasing trash.

I am happy that COH3 is getting updates. I am sure that eventually it will be amazing if the updates continue but why do you subject your PC audience to becoming beta testers for the console release?

Next time just release whatever future game you make as Early Access because that is essentially what COH3 is now and you could avoid damaging your brand with Mostly Negative Reviews on steam while you work to have a proper launch.

Some 1v1 maps and 2v2 maps are really needed ! It's exhausting to keep playing on this tiny roster... Lovely release targets nevertheless.

I appreciate the adjustments to communication and being more direct. I'd agree that the launch was very bumpy, but am glad to see all of these updates that Relic is pushing out as quickly as they can.

For the folks saying "focus on the profiles updates before expansions"... those are different teams. You have specific teams of people that work on user interface features but the designers and game artists/ modelers etc need something to do. There's not an on/off switch for that stuff. Both can happen at the same time. Again, it was a bumpy launch and features weren't there that I was expecting, but they're doing their best to update things. Honestly, it's good to see that people care so much about this franchise to give their feedback. I love CoH and really want them to polish this game up into something that I can recommend to more folks that aren't diehard fans.

I will believe it when I see it. Too many times do games fail to corporate expectations and we get a corporate apology about communication. I hope this means improvements to the game and not sliding in ways to milk the game for cash and fake interviews to cover it up. I want this game to succeed, but I'm still waiting.

Are you really planing to release an expansion before ALL basic funcionality features are reintroduced to the game?

These roadmaps always feel like 1 step forward, 2 steps back. In my eyes you should consider swapping Expansion 1 with Spectator mode & Replay functionalty.

AE's tournaments, advertising your game, sadly are a janky viewing experience because the game needs to be modfied by unpaid community members to have a somewhat decent replay mode. AE is really pouring his heart into the Master League, but Relic so far does not seem to care on bit about the ecosystem behind coh3 longevity.

很喜欢这个游戏,但是目前非常不完整,甚至是半成品,这不是一款精品游戏发售后的状态。

所以请专注于改进这个游戏,而不是过早开发新内容.

Good that you are adding to the game.  Can you add the player names with the CNTL key like CoH2 and the player list in the HUD so we know who's playing and who our enemy / allies are?  That would be an easy fix and super helpful for multiplayer . . . .

About expansion 1.

3 Ideas for Relics.

FACTIONS.

Immediately after the Allied invasion of Italy in September 1943, the Italian government switched sides. The German occupying forces ruthlessly disarmed the Royal Italian Army and from then until the end of the war Italian troops fought on both sides:  with the forces of the 'Salo Republic' allied with the Germans, in the Allied 'Co-Belligerent Forces'. This period of bitter struggle saw the appearance of many new Italians units and a wide range of interesting uniforms. An Italian faction would bring a complete refreshing vibe to the game with it’s never seen vehicles, playstyle and armament, and the Italian fight alongside the two belligerents after 1943 could present great evolution for the playing game. We can have (like it was in the real history) two Italian factions one with the Allies and one with the Axis.

With its rugged mountain ridges, deep valleys, and numerous rivers, Italy contained tens of thousands of natural defensive positions. The Wehrmacht and Axis Italian units exploited these to the full during the ensuing campaign, bogging down the Anglo-American armies in an endless series of costly, time-consuming engagements. Sometimes, Italians form the two rival factions faced each other on the battlefields.

EXPANSION BATTLE OF CRETE.

The Battle of Crete (codenamed Operation Mercury) was a major Axis airborne and amphibious operation during World War II to capture the island of Crete. It began on the morning of 20 May 1941, with multiple German airborne landings on Crete and it was the first occasion where Fallschirmjäger were used so widely, the first mainly airborne invasion in military history. On 26 May, in the face of the stalled German advance, senior Wehrmacht officers requested Mussolini to send Italian Army units to Crete in order to help the German forces fighting there. On the afternoon of 27 May, an Italian convoy departed from Rhodes with the intention of landing a brigade from the 50th Infantry Division Regina, supported by 13 L3/35 light tanks.

EXPANSION WAR AT SEA.

Elite World War II Italian naval unit Decima Flottiglia MAS is considered by many to be the first modern naval commando squad. Assembled by Prince Junio Valerio Borghese at the beginning of the war, these "frogmen" were trained to fight undercover and underwater with small submarines and assault boats armed with a variety of torpedoes--pioneering tactics that remain a standard for Special Forces around the world today. This magnificent effort was devoted primarily to attack by means of slow speed piloted torpedoes nicknamed “pigs” by the Italians. The success of these human torpedoes was almost entirely at the expense of the British Mediterranean Fleet whose ships were attacked in Gibraltar, Suda Bay, Alexandria, Algiers, and elsewhere. Of special interest is the fact that in all cases the British ships were at anchor inside of booms and nets and in harbors under constant surveillance by patrol craft. So, despite it seem to be not in line of the brand COH because it is naval, in effect they attached ports with ships in the docks so it is very appropriate for the COH 3 game to have an expansion in this field. The action takes place in a harbor and you will play like a normal map because you must move soldiers and equipment to destroy fixed ships like objective in the ground. It will be a really new, fresh and amazing experience in the real time staregic games…

I am pretty concerned about a few things in Coh3 that don't seem to be getting any attention, or at least I don't see them mentioned in any of the future plans...

There are several major things that are problems withing the game, of varying degree of course. But many of these are related to gameplay, controls and cleanliness of design. They aren't good in Coh3, really not acceptable at all, and they will play a major role on if I (and probably many others) will continue to play the game long term. In no particular order, all of the items I can think of in regards to my statement above...

- Vehicle pathing is a mess. Seems largely based on the map, but vehicles need continued improvement to how they move around. There is a lot of frustration in trying to control vehicles

- Vehicles get stuck on capping poles

- Vehicle reverse range is not good

- Retreat paths on certain maps does not make sense as they run towards the center before heading to base

- Issues trying to click your unit icons. This might be the biggest single issue with the game currently, imo. I often have major problems clicking my unit icons and there is no greater frustration than not being able to do so. Please address this ASAP!

- No icons for plantable items on the ground. Demo charges, mines, etc don't give any icon to click in order to finish them or in the case of demo charge to detonate them!

- Units are still hitting items with regards to elevation. Elevation needs a lot of tuning, its better with the latest patch, but still not great. Now AT guns fire through everything. I know this is probably a temporary fix, but it is creating a lot of additional rng in the game.

- Still very difficult to determine when you may have elevation advantage. It would be nice if the maps made this more clear somehow

- Tacmap is too small on screen, enemy icons get in the way of your icons, icons are too big so they overlap, buff icons shouldn't be shown, etc etc. Tacmap needs a complete overhaul

- In game UI is still a disaster and is not a finished product. Many icons still look like placeholders, DAK upgrade icons don't show you when you have upgraded. DAK callins feel completely out of place in their current locations. Still can't see kill counts of units (hidden).

- In game ui sticks on building page when you click to other units. This may be the second most annoying thing in the game! It will constantly cause you to do orders you don't intend to do. PLEASE ASAP fix this!

- Menu UI looks like its had 1 hour put into it. This really is a sad situation here. Menu UI is a big deal, and its to y'alls benefit to make it right.

- 2D portraits are still not 100% corrected for this game...Still have coh2 portraits in places.

Hmm.

This us what i call dead game. If you tell that basic features for multiplayer RTS like Replays and Observer Mode is not your priority, Relic can shut the game right now.
Matchmaking in 1v1 is terrible. I get constantly paired against players 500 ranks higher. It's even worse for Axis, because in addition to poor pairing it is common to wait over 3 minutes for a match.
I advise Relic to look at the steam reviews and reconsider their ways. I'm afraid that console version will flop, and we will have announcement around July that Relic stops the support for the game like they did with DoW3.
edit:
I just got paired with top 20 DAK player. Almost 1500 ranks gap.
