Is there a mechanism to penalize people from dropping/quitting prematurely?

You know the type, if they can't overwhelm their opponents in the first 5 minutes, they want to quit.

I would suggest coward points = -2 x merit points (i.e. deduct merit)

The game has an automatch cooldown system that escalates in severity for just what you've outlined.
